An organization which I started my volunteer, it is the ASEAN Youth Leaders Association-Cambodia ( AYLA-Cambodia). It is the first organization which I applied to be a volunteer.
After the due date ended, I got an e-mail.
I was so excited, and I told my parents that I was selected as a shortlist candidate; however, I still felt anxiety because I still have to wait for interview. The interview day came, I was so nervous, and I could not focus on any thing in that morning. Because I was going to be interviewed through phone call, I had to wait for their call. It had not started yet, but I almost got the heart attack. What a shame and what the fun! Lolzzz xD
On 12th July 2015, I was selected to be a volunteer in AYLA-Cambodia for a project "Youth and Human Trafficking Awareness Raising", and after the warm welcome from the President and members of AYLA-Cambodia, the president introduced volunteers about AYLA-Cambodia, projects of AYLA and so many things. These impressed me during the orientation, and I really did appreciate all its members’ ambitions. They are so young, but they are so proactive and have a big heart. How could they form such a great international youth organization like that? How could it exist? I always kept asking myself about that. Four hours later the meeting ended.
All the members were so busy working on that project, and I learned a lot from them. First, I learned about my society. I know more about the thing that had happened in my society, especially I started to feel the victims’ hardship who was trafficked by the traffickers. Moreover, I learned and known the trick that those traffickers usually does in order to cheat on the victims. Most importantly, I have spread out the information that I have learned from the project to my parents, family, relatives, friends, and especially to my professors by choosing the topic related to human trafficking to write in my writing class during the examination.
Second, it helped me to get out of my comfort zone, I learned to expose myself to the world, I felt like start to socialize, and I started to see the world much bigger than I used to see because I can see the complexity of things that happened in the world. Surprisingly, AYLA-Cambodia gave another opportunity of which I had never had and expected before. They invited me to do the survey on Cambodian people to know how Cambodian people think toward human trafficking that has happened in Cambodia for a long time. Besides, the President allowed me to be a female model in the video promotion of this project. Also, after the very first workshop that held at Royal University of Law and Economic (RULE) ended, and I saw myself on TV when I was interviewed by a journalist from PNN channel, and Radio Free Asia (RFA) asked me about the purpose of AYLA’s project and the workshop. I told my parents to watch TV and listen to radio, but I was so shy at that time because it was my first time that I see myself on the TV and hear my voice on the radio…LOL…I laughed my head off at that time. Noticeably, I started to care more about my society, and I also committed myself to take responsibility to take care of my society and my country, I do not want to see my beloved Cambodian people fall into that hardship anymore, I cannot just stand and look at them asking for help, I cannot do it, I have to find solution to help my nation.
Third, it helped me built up network, I started to know many potentail people. They are respectable and knowledgeable, and I am so happy that I have met them because they are good and kind and always provided good advise to me. They are my best guidance and model forever. Five months later the project has come to an end, I feel hopeless because I will be have nothing to do with after this project finish.
Finally, I really thank to AYLA-Cambodia for giving me a lot of opportunities to learn more about our society; Helping me extend my horizontal so that I can expose myself outside and see how big the world is, and building up the network with many amazing people. What I could say to AYLA-Cambodia when this project end, please do not forget me. Also when you need a volunteer for your new projects, please dont forget me.
I wish you reach your goal and achieve in everything that you wished.
What a nice day!
Fortunately, I was not dumped. The president of AYLA posted a status in a group to call all volunteers for a meeting in order to ask the volunteer whether they want to be AYLA officer. Without further delay, the answer “YES, I WANT” popped up in my head, but I have to keep calm until the meeting day. The meeting day come, the President started to talk about it and gave sometimes for volunteers to think whether they want to become an officer or not. I just kept silence because I already have answer... XD. The due date come, and I informed the President that “Yes president, I accept to be an officer of AYLA-Cambodia”.
Since December 2015 until now, it’s been three months that I become an officer of AYLA. I’m in the position Social Media. My duty is to post everything which is related to AYLA’s projects, ASEAN, exchange programs, etc… I have learned a lot since I become an officer. Firstly, I learned to discipline myself because I want to step out of my comfort zone to learn and add something new in my life, want struggle and suffer through facing the challenges as human beings. Secondly, I have learned to take responsible, it does not mean I never take responsible before but it taught me to take more responsible more than I used to.
My position, to make in simple, I have to take responsible for posting things in AYLA’s page, so I have to take responsible for doing research documentaries, read books, news, or create something to attract the audience in order to promote AYLA within the region and around the globe. My heart is big, I do want to make AYLA-Cambodia standing out on the international stage; however, sometimes I could not manage it due to I have my personal stuff to do as well as my degree, so I failed to manage and lack of responsible for my tasks. I know that it’s my duty but I am reckless to take care of it. Failure taught me to know what my weaknesses are and how to deal with it, and now I have found a solution to deal with it. Before, I am not good at time management, but now I can manage it better than before. For instance, I can make time to read books, and complete my task in a day by dividing into sections and choose the priority one or two to complete first. Thirdly, I have learned to build up my leadership skill; although I’m not that strong to lead the others. I can managing myself and I lead myself to become stronger day by day. Another, I have become more independent, I can make decision on my own, and I start to feel do not want others’ influence on my life anymore because my president always advise that “You have to learn to be independent and to be a leader”, Lastly, AYLA has given me such a great opportunity to experience in foreign country through exchange program because all the delegates, AYLA-Cambodia members and I are going to Singapore next month for an exchange program from 15-21 March 2016. See you soon Singapore.
All in all, AYLA has given me a lot of opportunities and allow me to experience a lot of things including exchange program in foreign countries, build up my leadership, build up my capacity to complete my duty, and make me become an independent person. I couldn’t imagine what my life would be if I didn’t meet AYLA-Cambodia. I could not find another word instead “Thank you for choosing me to be a part of you”. I Wish AYLA become stronger and stronger, reach the objectives, and succeed in what AYLA have wished.
Hey Mixed Squad and AYLA-Cambodia Squad, Good Luck!
